Matsushima Views

Well, it’s been a while since I last updated, but really I haven’t been doing anything other than working and laying low. A couple of weeks ago, though Mana came to visit for a long weekend and we went back to Matsushima. I’ve posted pictures of the area before, but there are multiple places to go so we tried a few different ones.

Around the town there are four spots called the Four Views of Matsushima. Basically these are four elevated spots where you can get the best views of the bay and the islands in the distance. They’re pretty spread out, though, so we only were able to see one. Each views has a name, and the one we went to is Enchanting View. The other three are Magnificent View, Beautiful View, and Grand View.

When you first arrive, there’s a really nice little area that looks cultivated. There are some hiking trails that branch off nearby.

The stairs up to the view.

The Magnificent View.

At the top of each of the views there’s a shrine or temple. I think this one was to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy.

Afterward we stopped by an open market that sold various seafood like Clams and Oysters. It was nice because they had a pot of soup with tiny clams in it going, and anyone who came by got a free bowl with another bowl being pretty cheap. It was really good. They also sold raw and cooked oysters and these things were huge. I wish I had gotten a picture of them. The shell had to be a good 4 inches long. They probably fish them out literally across the street, so they’re pretty much as fresh as you could ask for, too. Mana and I each had a raw one. It was good, but a little too big for my tastes, so it was kind of hard to eat.

I plan on going back at some point to try to get photos of the other three views. The best part about it is that Matsushima is only about 45 minutes away so it’s a great place to take a day trip to.
